It is infectious, and stays with you for days. It's classic Level This awesome vintage Level 42 from their early days in there career. You can't find this sound from musicians anymore in my opinion. I really like this group and have 7 of their CDs. I am selective and only record the songs I really like, typically 4 to 6 songs on most CDs but I didn't like a single song on this CD well enough to add it to my play list.
Since sadly the music world still tends to cast a cool, embarrassed eye on the 's? This might be a good place to showcase what qualities made Level 42 so special. After their European breakthrough with their previous album, produced by Verdine White and Larry Dunn,Level 42 got back together while Mark King prepared to make a solo album without leaving the fold.
Something new was happening within Level Having gotten so hugely successful in the UK? They wanted to fall back on their true calling as musicians. So the title of this album couldn't be anymore self explanatory. The jazzy choruses of Mark King have very little to do with the rest of the song. On this album,Level 42 emerge as more than just a little strong instrumentalists. Every song on this albums has the sense from listening to them that they all emerged from a very interesting creative process that only the band may know about.
There's a possibility that the world beat sound coming into play was entering into their orbit at this point. Brazilian and Hispanic LP and Album) ideas are beginning to take front and center. And a strong use of stacked, percussive polyrhythms and beats were becoming their rhythmic basis. Their music was delving even further into their instrumental side, and becoming rather less commercial in the process.
Not only that, their lyric tales reflecting on romantic visions and non conformity were also more pronounced. I don't know if Level 42 admirers always rate this very highly. It's not as easy to get into as some of their other albums.
But for the instrumentally oriented listener? There's much to love and learn from this music. I can still feel my acne and remember those cider-tasting french kisses In the s being a fan of Level 42 was cool True Colours pre-dated Cyndi Lauper's album of the same name by some years please don't get confused. Floating Life Hmmmm Hot Water A classic for all fans, perhaps one of the funkiest pop lines ever - and one that spawned some of the best live jazz-funk-pop in history.
Simple and straight to the point - just as it should be. Again, nice bass-as-lead from Mr Mark King. Kansas City Milkman I had chicken pox and had a tape of 'Physical Presence' a live version of this song is on it and is the finest live recording I have ever heard. That being the case, this suffers in comparison personally but it's still a great song, with top lyrics and some nice changes in pace. True Believers The best ever bass line in a song ever - period.
Listen to the way it meanders through this high-paced song and then delight in the bass solo. Absolutely superb. Lyrics rock, too Koyate Ahem. Nice beat and ethnic drums and all that Seven Days Another nice slowy. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. On this item you can here their seek for a new identity into the eighties, a search for a more straight forward manner and simple way to express their talents that they could prove so much times before mostely heard on "The Chant has begun", a kind of world groove very forest style with some poly-synth brass hits, with a strong contrasted duality from soft with the voice of mike lindup to power part bass line and sung by Mark King, the most successful idea they made is found on "Hot Water" who remained of one of their long time live favourites, an can be heard in many different versions, the one on this album is the first long interesting version.
An album full of deep found compositions, listen to long "Kansas City Milkman" full of suprises and mystery with a interesting piano loop mounted on the bass line with on top sophisticated chords, a master song, we know Level 42 can do that, it's a prove of they knowledge and skills. Other gems that will please the ultimate Bass grooves lovers from the early albums must listen to "True Believers" or "My hero" the hidden song LP no lyrics mentionned in the album sleeve.
Finally "Hours by the Window" shows us how a bass can make a complete ballad structure accompagnement, a special sound just with some digital keyboard sounds an soft drumming part that makes the song just with Marks voice.
This Album is filled with very good keyboard sounds and good solo ideas, thanks to Mike Lindup like the other part from Wally Badarou at the top of they inspirations. Some other could also say the structure would not be completed without the rythmical perfection that brought the brother Gould, the drum part his Worthy even if the guitar by boon was always very discret, but always interlinked with the bass of Mark King and the rythmic brought LP his brother phil.
This Album is definitively a must from Level 42 on the rise to their golden success they deserved anyway. One of their very best.
