Yorkston also sent a James Yorkston And The Athletes - Sweet Jesus (Vinyl) to John Martyn, requesting an opening slot on his Edinburgh show. Martyn invited Yorkston to be his opening act for all 30 dates. In Januaryit was released as a 7" single. His debut album, Moving Up Country, followed in June. The results of the session were released in late as Just Beyond the River on Domino. Arriving inWhen the Haar Rolls In was a confident follow-up, and he joined forces with Sheffield's Big Eyes Family Players in James Yorkston And The Athletes - Sweet Jesus (Vinyl) produce an album of traditional material simply titled Folk Songs.
Yorkston's canon has always betrayed a literary slant and, fittingly, he published the effortlessly witty It's Lovely to Be Here: The Touring Diaries of a Scottish Gent in The following year saw the release of I Was a Cat from a Book, his first album of self-penned material in four years, and The Cellardyke Recording and Wassailing Society — recorded in London with Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip on production duties — arrived in summer Both that album and his novel, Three Craws, arrived in early Yorkston spent time touring the album's over the next year, before settling back into his own writing process.
For his James Yorkston And The Athletes - Sweet Jesus (Vinyl) album, and his first solo release sinceYorkston retreated to the small village of Cellardyke on the East coast of Scotland with producer David Wrench.
The resulting release, Route to the Harmonium, which found Yorkston musing on life and death, was issued at the beginning of Patrick James Yorkston - Summer Song James Yorkston - 5 a. He has also written fiction and non-fiction books. Yorkston started out as bassist for punk band Miraclehead, which morphed into the band Huckleberry, who recorded a number of independently released records. Yorkston's solo career began when John Peel played a demo of his "Moving Up Country, Roaring the Gospel", proclaiming it had the best song title of the year.
Wright Presents". Pete Paphides of The Times wrote, "Yorkston has reached a state of grace that writers can spend forever trying to attain: songs that sound not so much written as carefully retrieved from your own subconscious, played with an intuition bordering on telepathy. What more could you ask for? Once there, however, its lovely, understated melodies, autumnal arrangements and warm, wry lyrics Also inDomino Records released Roaring the Gospela collection of EP tracks, overseas releases and new songs, which led the NME to observe that "Yorkston has talent as deep as a mine shaft", while the BBC website said, "Yorkston and his Athletes bathe their songs with warmth, allowing them to nestle snugly in a lush bed of tenderly plucked acoustic guitars, sighing woodwind and gently wheezing accordion.
Yorkston's involvement with the Fence Collective continued: he has toured extensively with King Creosote and regularly contributed to the Fence Collective's Homegame mini-festivals featuring guest performances by James Yorkston And The Athletes - Sweet Jesus (Vinyl) such as The Concretes and Hot Chip.
As the title suggests, all of the tracks are traditional British and Irish folk songs along with one from GaliciaSpain. Yorkston, Thorne and Khan have taken advantage of these possibilities to create an album that bristles with inventiveness and skill, an album that is more than the sum of its already impressive parts. His ninth album, The Route to the Harmoniumrecorded in the small Scottish fishing village of Cellardyke and co-produced by David Wrench, was released on 22 Februaryvia Domino to mostly positive reviews.
You'd never know that tonight the rest of the nation have been glued to their TV sets watching a bunch of large men run around after a rugby ball, but I guess people get their kicks in different ways. Labels: fairport conventionfolkfolk-rockgladstonemoon music orchestra. Tuesday, 2 October Tenderoni lovin. Tenderoni by Chromeo was being given as a free download to play around with and I couldn't resist.
Not exactly a radical tweak, but I think I prefer it to their version - a bit more percussion, a few less verses, a bit more synth towards the end. Tuesday, 25 September Remix corner. It's not very sophisticated, you can't bring in new sounds or change the tempo, but it's still quite fun to mess around with.
Monday, 17 September It's time for Black Time! It's true that this is largely because my friend Matthew is lead singer and guitarist in the band. But it's also true that if they were shite I'd have given up going to see them many many gigs ago. As it is, I've seen them maybe 7 or 8 times, at venues all over London Most recently, I caught them playing third on the bill at The Dirty Water Club - the home of garage rock n roll in London.
Don't be deceived by their lowly placing on the bill though - this is a night they've headlined in the past, and they also supported 60s legends The Monks whose album they are named after here not so long ago. Tonight's set is short, sharp and one of their best.
After the gig bass player Lisa complains that she hit lots of wrong notes, but I can't say I noticed. There's so much energy and rock n roll cool going on that no-one's gonna notice a few bum notes. Tunes like Girls in the Garage and Feel So Bad are rattled off so quickly you barely have time to take in the fact that they're kick ass tunes with melody to spare.
Matthew's bluesy guitar meanwhile is impressive and improving all the time though he'd probably hate to admit it. Black Time are well known in Europe in garage rock circles at least and have toured the States.
Though a big breakthrough in the UK hardly seems likely, if you see their name on a flyer or gig guide, try and check them out. Jesus, Walk With Me Whatever You Want Football Kids Hopes And Dreams Everything Goes Heaven When I Come Around Leave The North In The Morning Sometimes Tracklist: 1.
